the festivalThe Kannamaroo Festival is a free, family friendly community festival and is a major event for the rural city of Horsham, the heart of the Wimmera region.
The festival commenced in 1980 and has been operating ever since. The festival was originally located on the banks of the Wimmera River and the iconic waterway was the inspiration behind the name for the festival; ‘Kanna’ meaning (beautiful) and ‘Amaroo’ meaning (waterhole). Due to periods of drought over the decades, the Kannamaroo Festival was relocated to Firebrace Street and became a market festival, in the heart of Horsham’s shopping precinct. The committee is working hard to return the festival to a 3 day event, incorporating both Firebrace Street and the Wimmera River. Held annually on the last full weekend of November, four weeks before Christmas, the Kannamaroo is a way for the community to come together in a free and safe environment. The festival is unique to Horsham and is a wonderful occasion where local people catch up with mates they haven't seen for a while, browse the local shops in the lead up to Christmas and enjoy some of the finest food, music and entertainment the Wimmera has to offer. The festival attracts thousands of people and fosters a strong sense of community pride and inclusiveness for all. In return, the festival receives amazing support from the Horsham Rural City Council and its' major sponsor The Weekly Advertiser. Being a part of the Kannamaroo Festival is a great way to showcase the talents and skills of local people. We encourage everyone to get involved in the festival. the committee
The Kannamaroo Festival committee is made up completely of volunteers. These people are dedicated, hard working and fun loving individuals who all live and work in the Horsham area, but most importantly they all see the value in contributing their time and effort to the festival. The hours donated by the committee keep the festival running and free for the community. We encourage anyone who is interested in joining the committee or becoming a volunteer to contact us, we'd really appreciate it.
